Colombia's President Says 'I Shall Take Up Arms Again' if American Forces Launches an Attack.

President Trump along with his Colombian counterpart have intensified the tone in their verbal conflict, further raising strains in their relations following US forces struck Venezuela in an operation to oust President Nicolás Maduro from office.

"He has drug factories and cocaine factories and his time is running out," Trump remarked.

Growing Tensions and Claims

Addressing the press on Sunday, the American leader suggested comparable military action against Bogotá, asserting the country faces serious problems and “run by a problematic figure involved in producing narcotics and selling it to the United States."

While Colombia is the world’s largest source of the narcotic, authorities have found no indication linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly tied to the business.

A Deteriorating Partnership

The country for decades served as a close partner of the US in the struggle combating drug cartels and received cross-party backing in the US capital, however, the relationship have worsened markedly following Trump assumed the presidency.

The nation's illicit drug economy is mainly overseen by illegal armed groups like the Golf Clan, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and breakaway groups of the demobilized Farc, most of its former fighters laid down arms after a historic peace agreement.

Petro's Firm Response

Upon being questioned whether armed intervention similar to Venezuela was being considered for Colombia, Trump replied: "That seems like a good idea to me."

President Petro, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who disarmed in the 1990s, firmly denied Trump's claims. "I am no illegitimate and certainly not involved in narcotics," he declared.

"He comments without knowledge. End the false accusations," he expressed in a post.

"If US bombs target peasants, they will transform into thousands of guerrillas in the hills. If they capture me, whom many of Colombians loves and respects, they will provoke the ‘jaguar’ of the populace," Petro warned.

From Fighter to Statesman

Petro spent some years as a young man as a member with the radical M-19 armed organization but is not believed he did not participated in combat. Upon leaving the group, he took part in writing the nation's constitution in 1991 subsequently becoming a prominent senator. He served as mayor of Bogotá before winning the nation's highest office.

"I made a vow not to touch a gun ... but in defense of my country I will take up the fight," he affirmed.

Reinforced Protection along with Cross-Political Rejection

The Colombian defence minister reported that the national leader's personal security had been reinforced.

A segment of Colombia’s right wing opposition have sided with the US president, however, leaders spanning the ideological divide have condemned the threats of an invasion against their nation.

Diplomatic and Economic Sanctions

American authorities withdrew his travel authorization subsequent to he called on American soldiers to disobey any illegal orders. In October, authorities imposed economic restrictions on Petro, the first lady and a number of close collaborators.

Simultaneously the US was building up its troop levels in the region and targeting alleged narcotics traffickers to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets executed operations against vessels in Pacific waters adjacent to Colombia.
