The Compassion of Unknown Individuals: How a Man I Barely Knew Supported Me Secure the Job That Transformed My Existence

In the late 1980s, I was beginning a backpacking trip to the European continent with a friend. Because my friend was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in NYC, we had booked a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We arrived at the graduate housing, a big ten-floor structure on the Upper West Side called International House. After dropping our bags, we went directly to the canteen, where we got some food, found a table, and started talking to people eating there.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He wanted to know what I did for a living, and I told him that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been working on studies with electron microscopy.

He noted that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – adjacent to the school of engineering, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He suggested that I consider applying for a position with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, saying that I was heading off to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The engineering student came up to me and told me that he had arranged an interview for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off told my interviewer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a metropolis where opportunities abound – she said: “We can make that happen. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I worked there for a trio of years. One of the benefits was that I got free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

I never saw that student again and I don’t even know his name, but his remarkable generosity altered my destiny in multiple respects. I lacked the bravery or nerve to reach out at an elite institution and seek a position. And, I had always wanted to take classes in another country, but lacked the financial means without that free tuition.

Critically, that job in New York paved the way for a role in Europe where I got to know my handsome spouse from France, with whom I currently share four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
